CROWDS

The “Crowds” project arose from the need to contemplate the distance and closeness between people on the same surface. In these works, there is no nature, no animals, no geography; only people. Alone and together.

In the paintings, figures multiply, overlap, and approach each other but often do not make contact. Bodies sharing the same space appear to be in a common movement, yet each is closed within itself. The crowd signifies not so much a togetherness as a gathering of solitudes.

I deliberately simplified the figures. The faces and bodies are almost anonymous; faceless but familiar. This anonymity reveals the individual's dissolution within the crowd and, at the same time, their struggle to exist. Small groups of people in motion are like parts of a flow; however, the direction of this flow is uncertain.

The ink stains and tonal transitions on the paper create a sense of density and compression. The figures sometimes gather within dark areas, sometimes remain alone in the void. This contrast points to the crowd's nature, both inclusive and engulfing.

This series questions the relationship of power, distance, and existence that humans establish not with nature, but with their own kind. It invites us to think about the individual who becomes invisible in the crowd and, at the same time, the weight of humanity that multiplies.
